The mayor of a B.C. city in the West Kootenays has quit following backlash over a trip he took with his family to their cabin two hours away from his home.

Castlegar Mayor Bruno Tassone has yet to return messages, but according to the Castlegar News, he says he felt bullied for a decision to travel to his cabin at Mount Baldy in the Okanagan over the Christmas holidays.

The mayor told The News that his family took the trip because his wife has mental health issues and they needed to get away. He said they abided by health orders, stayed in their bubble, took everything they needed with them and did not stop along the way.

Holiday travel by government officials has been under the microscope after B.C.’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry asked British Columbians to “stay small and stay local” over the holidays .

Castlegar council says it will appoint a chief election officer and that a byelection will be held in 80 days, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Chief administrative officer Chris Barlow thanked Tassone for his service and said his commitment to the community “spans decades and positively impacted” the city.

In his resignation letter to council, Tassone said it has been difficult and that he was naïve to think his political journey wouldn’t affect his family.

“But as time has gone on, my position as mayor has unfortunately challenged my physical health, as well as the toll bullying and hypocrisy within the media has taken on my spirit. When it affects my family it is not acceptable.”

He also stated he finds it “extremely disheartening” that some council members “who wish to stand for inclusion, advocation and awareness around mental health have come to be the very people instigating and inflicting pain onto others.”

He said he is no longer able to serve as mayor because his physical and mental health must come first.

On Saturday, Castlegar Coun. Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff said she was “really surprised” to hear he resigned.

“The mayor’s decision to resign was his own. I was surprised by his decision and it was not encouraged or asked for by council,” she said. “I am saddened to hear Bruno felt as though he was bullied at the table. In democracy we need to ask the hard questions and have debate.”

She said not once in six years had the mayor expressed he was being or felt bullied.

“I hope in the future if someone feels bullied at the council table, we can work together and stop that from happening. Stating this after the fact has now weaponized individuals in our community to bully and harass members of council. Any bullying or harassment is wrong and should not be condoned.”

Heaton-Sherstobitoff said they had asked residents to avoid non-essential travel during the holidays in line with provincial health guidelines.

Another councillor, Florio Vassilakakis, said he was disappointed with the mayor’s decision and felt the trip was unnecessary.

“This is not on the same level as the federal politicians who have gone into places where they clearly should not have gone; however, our advisory was stick to your own region. And that is a fair point that he should be accountable to,” he said.

“I would never judge him and tell him to leave office, because nobody wants to see this happen.”

He also doesn’t believe Tassone’s letter of resignation paints an accurate picture of what happens at council.

“I don’t think vigorous debate should be confused with bullying,” he said.

Tassone was elected to office in 2014 and elected as mayor in 2018.

The issue of politicians travelling during the holidays is in the spotlight because of COVID-19 health orders and recommendations not to travel from the B.C. government.

A growing number of provincial and federal politicians, as well as government officials, in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec have faced scrutiny for vacationing abroad, including to Caribbean destinations such as St. Barts and Barbados.

Canadians, however, were advised to curb the spread of COVID-19 by limiting non-essential activities and holiday gatherings.

It was also revealed this week that a member of Vancouver’s senior leadership team and several municipal councillors from West Vancouver and the Victoria area left the country in recent weeks, in defiance of provincial recommendations against non-essential travel.
